- The first member of the noble Uf-family to appear in Bornholm's historical records was Johannes/Jens/Hans Uff, who was appointed commander of Hammershus fortress by his mother's brother Niels Jensen (Bild).
Archbishop Jacob died in 1361, and was buried on the 18th of February in Lund. Niels Jensen, a clerk who is faithful to Valdemar and said to have been from Jylland, is appointed his successor: "1361 d?de ?rkebisp Jacob paa Hammershus. Man valgte derpaa Niels jysk af herkomst." (1361 died Archbishop Jacob at Hammershus. The one selected thereafter was Niels from Jutland.) Later that year the Hansa offer Valdemar 1,200 Mark for the return of their priviledges. Valdemar demands 4,000, and the Hansa agree. Then Valdemar conquers Gotland, one of the Hansa's own territories. The Hansa allies itself with Magnus and Haakan and send a fleet up the sound. Valdemar defeats it, then reaffirms his previous alliance with Magnus and Haakan. Haakan's intended bride, Elisabeth of Holstein, is intercepted on her way to Sweden by Niels Joensen and held captive on Bornholm.
In 1368 Valdemar leaves Denmark to his governor Henning Podebusk while he pursues support in Europe. Albrekt of Sweden attacks Sk?ne, taking control of the north-west. He is supported by Tue Andersen Galen (nephew of Peder Jensen, the previous Archbishop), Anders Jakobsen Grim and Hasse Tuesen Galen. The war goes against Denmark. The cathedral compound in Lund is conquered and ?hus is besieged. Niels Jensen flees to Bornholm.
During a long winter stay at the fortress the Archbishop died on February 5, 1379. Two days previously he had written his testament, wherein he left to Johannes/Jens/Hans Uff his large gilded silver-horn and two silver cups, also 40 Mark in silver to cover expenses for flour, malt, and other items used during his stay. As well he received the rights to six dwellings in Listed fishing-village, which he had had built for the Archbishop, and which brought in 6 Mark silver in yearly rent.
During Johannes/Jens/Hans Uff's long term of office he acquired land in the region north-west of Svaneke. The Archbishop also thought of Uff's daughter Cecilie, leaving her a gold ring. She was later married three times, all of her husbands were noblemen from Sk?ne; she outlived them all.
